Bhumi P. Description of Project: Cystic fibrosis is an escalating phenomenon with detrimental effects. A major part of this life shortening disease is the presence of excess mucus in the lungs. Currently, there is no cure and the only option for victims is periodically coughing up the build up of mucus. We propose packaging a chemical (possibly a gene since cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease) into an inhalable nanoparticle, which will eventually release the chemical into the lungs, reducing the mucus synthesis. Website Project: Radar Watch URL: Radar Watch Website School: Bergen County Academies Facilitator: Evelyn Rios Mentor: Peter Eisengrein, GPX Enterprises Team Members: Rich L, Jason C, Joel M Description of Project: Our Techxplore project focused on the creation of an electronic device that would help aid soldiers in battle by providing invaluable vital information, a graphical outlay of the surroundings, and a live-feed to army commanders. One major restriction present in the army is the speed of medical help. It takes too much time for the appropriate medical attention to be attained. Thus we need to find ways to prevent possible injuries and provide medical information. PowerPoint Project: Wind Turbine Cars URL: Wind Turbine Cars PowerPoint School: Queens High School for the Sciences at York College Facilitator: Shanaz Baksh and Thomas Cork Mentor: Zack Adams Team Members: Soung Hun and Young Hyun Description of Project: This experiment dealt with engineering a new source of energy for automobiles to reduce gaseous emissions into the atmosphere. What we have suggested is to use something natural to propel our automobile. We felt that since wind and air current is present everywhere in the world, at least when the car is moving, it would be sufficient to propel an automobile. Researching energy provided by the use of wind turbines, we feel that by inventing an efficient wind turbine, we can fuel a car and thus use it as an alternate fuel source. PowerPoint Project: Taking Carbon and Stuffing it! URL: Carbon Storage Powerpoint School: Blanche Ely High School Facilitator: Mark Eyerman Mentor: Louis Castillo Team Members: Chantelle H, Christian C, Janique M, Anna-Kaye F, Khrystyne M Description of Project: The major problem which our group identified was finding a method to “reduce atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide.” The problem has become recognized because over the years carbon dioxide concentrations has dramatically increase and methods need to be sought out to keep it under control. Middle School Projects PowerPoint Project: X-treme Safety Helmets URL: X-treme Safety Helmets PowerPoint School: Saint Joan of Arc School Facilitator: Angie Buis Mentor: Louis Larkin Team Members: Amreen K., Ashley W., Ryan D., Schindler C., Jeffrey J., Jack I. Description of Project: X-treme Safety Helmets is a new concept that could someday sweep the nation. This new line of helmets for bicycles, skateboards, mountain climbing and off-road vehicles will be equipped with safety features. Shock sensors will alert an emergency response center if there is a trauma to the helmet. The global positioning system will allow a solo rider or mountain climber to be found in case of an emergency. PowerPoint Project: Genetic Defects URL: Genetic Defects PowerPoint School: Old Orchard Junior High School Facilitator: Ellen Gaffney Mentor: Rahul Lakdawala Team Members: Jazib G., Anosh A., Iris S., Katya G. Description of Project: There are many scans that can detect many kinds of genetic defects. Our idea is to make a device that could be stronger than an ultrasound and thoroughly search for the defect. |
